Toasting the Arts

The Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association in Blue Ridge, Georgia is “Toasting the Arts” with a wine and cheese tasting on February 11, 2012. Bring your valentine and enjoy an evening of wine and cheese from all around the region. Listen to some music and delight in some of the art on display by artists Tom Chambers and Paul Fontana.
The evening will begin at 7 PM. Tickets are on sale now and are $25 for Art Center members and $35 for non-members. This is the first fundraiser of the year. Spring Plein Aire Festival

The Blue Ridge Mountain Arts in Blue Ridge, Georgia is having their Spring Plein Aire Festival on April 9 – 10, 2011 from 9 AM to 4 PM. This two day event will offer many opportunities for artists as this is the same weekend as the Blue Ridge Mountain Adventure Race.
This juried art exhibition is open to all artists 18 and older. To participate in the show, your art must be completed in the Blue Ridge area on April 9 and 10, 2011. Blank canvases will be stamped with an approved insignia on April 9 and only those with stamps will be allowed in the exhibit and sale. All completed paintings must be suitably framed and ready to hang. Paintings are due at the Art Center on April 10 at 3 PM for hanging. Judging will begin at 4 PM. The art will be on display and available for sale at the Art Center from April 10 through April 29. Commissions from the sale of the art will go to benefit The Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association.
Awards will be given for the following: Artist Choice (Best in Show) - $100, Art and Adventure - $50, The Voice Magazine – a quarter page ad.

Knock ‘em Dead

See the hilarious, interactive murder mystery Knock ‘em Dead at the Blue Ridge Community Theater on April 7 – 10 and April 14 – 17, 2011. The story of this play takes place on the last night of a talent competition and features six very unusual acts: a ventriloquist whose lips move, a foul mouthed stand up comedienne, a baton twirling bimbo, a German songstress with a questionable accent, a flamboyant owner of a lip synching dog, and a hypnotist with a questionable past. A murder happens and all of these people are questioned by detectives and the audience until the case is solved. This play is rated R due to adult subject matter and language.
Showtimes are 7:30 PM on Thursday through Saturday. Matinees on Sunday are at 2 PM. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16.20 for seniors 65 and older, $9 for students college age and younger, and $14.40 each for groups of 10 or more. Season tickets and Flex passes are also available. 2011 Blue Ridge Writers’ Conference

Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association in Blue Ridge, Georgia is hosting the 2011 Blue Ridge Writers’ Conference on April 1 – 2, 2011. A reception will be held Friday, April 1, 2011 from 5 PM to 7 PM and will feature a book fair where many local authors will have their books available for sale. The conference will begin at 8:30 AM on Saturday, April 2, 2011. This year’s keynote speaker will be agent Sally McMillan. Other featured speakers will be Robert Brewer, editor of Writer’s Market and Poet’s Market; Scott Owens, editor of the online journal, Wild Goose Review, and Hope Clark, editor of the website, Funds for Writers.

Maxwell Taylor – Singer Extraordinaire

Maxwell Taylor will bring his one man show to the Art Center in Blue Ridge, Georgia on February 26, 2011 at 7 PM. Using his sultry, soulful voice and incredible range, he brings a number of voices to the stage. As a tribute to many influences in his life, he impersonates a wide variety of entertainers such as Michael Jackson, Barry White, Elvis Presley and more. You won’t want to miss his energetic and very entertaining performance!

7th Annual Helen Lewis Lecture

Every year since 2005 the Craddock Center has presented a lecture to honor Dr. Helen Lewis. Each lecture features some aspect of Appalachian life. This year’s presenter will be folk artist, songwriter, and children’s book author, John McCutcheon.
The lecture will take place on February 18, 2011 at 7 PM at the Bonnie Higdon Reaves Auditorium on the Epworth campus of Reinhardt College. Contact the Craddock Center 706-632-1772 for more information and details about this event.

Songs and Stories-Appalachian Style

Bob and Melody Thomason will be performing Songs and Stories-Appalachian Style at the Performing Arts Center in Blue Ridge, Georgia on January 29, 2011 at 7:30 PM.
The Thomasons travel all around the Southeast performing their songs and stories about the Appalachian mountains and have been doing so for almost 30 years. Bob is an accomplished musician, storyteller, and lecturer and plays many instruments including the mountain dulcimer, banjo, and guitar with Melody adding her voice to the music. In addition to playing the dulcimer, Bob also builds them. He holds building workshops from Florida to Maine.
This show is being presented by the Craddock Center and the event is free of charge, however, free will offerings are always welcome to help cover the production costs of the event. For more information and details, contact the Craddock Center at 706-632-1772.
